Sydney Harbour Bridge Pylon Lookout

As part of the Harbour Bridge Climb you get given a free ticket for the Pylon Lookout. The huge four stone pylons at each corner of the bridge don't provide any structural support, which surprises most people there first time they find out. They cost one quarter of the original budget and were seen as important for aesthetic reasons and public confidence in the bridge. They certainly weren't worrying about budgets back then!

I climbed the pylon on a recent Sunday at sunset. You get a unique close up view of the bridge and sweeping views of the Harbour. It was lovely to see the Opera House bathed in the early evening sunshine.

As I mentioned in my post the Harbour Bridge Climb, I'd recommend visitors spend $10 to climb the Pylon and save yourself $200.

  2. Thanks for this post. My first time to Sydney and I'm currently in bed contemplating Pylon vs Climb before I leave tomo. Having read both posts I'm thinking Pylon has swung it. For $200 I'd want wow and it doesn't seem to have that.

Also I'm a geek and want lots of engineering info- sounds like the pylon museum will have more than the tour guide.
