Run club: Amsterdam Marathon

This weekend I'm off to Amsterdam to run the marathon. After the Six Foot Track was cancelled due to flooding earlier this year, it will be my maiden race of 2012.

My training has, thankfully, gone really well with no real injuries to speak of and I have only needed two trips to the physio to check out minor niggles.

I've covered a whopping 600miles / 960km in training, running five days a week for the past four months.

This time around most of my training has been running solo. I thought that I might struggle for motivation running on my own in a new city. Luckily I've found some good runs along the river or in south London's parks which are proving nearly as good. (Nothing can really replace the Sydney harbour though.)

I'm aiming for a new personal best in Amsterdam. The Sutherland Half Marathon last year inspired me that I could run more quickly and I've been trying to push harder in training this time around. I recently joined the Kent Athletics Club too and their Tuesday night training sessions are lightening fast. I can barely keep up, but it's a good workout to try!

As the nerves build in the run up to the race I've previously found myself hating the early morning training runs. That hasn't happened this time around, but I have been having angst about whether to change the way I tie my shoe laces and whether I'm eating the right food. All silly stuff really.

Wish me luck.

  1. Good luck!

I remember not so long ago you thought you couldn't get into running because of your knees... Meet the new Richard!

  2. Very true! Given all the problems I did have with my knee I'm surprised how well I get on with running these days.

I read ages ago that you put the stress of four times your weight through your knee joints. I've had less problems since I shed a few pounds. Not sure if it is related or not.
